Welcome to France! Perhaps you are here for a gap year, an exchange program with your university or just in holidays. You probably noticed few differences between these two amazing countries. Today we will meet Hannah, 25 years old, a super nanny from Be My Nounou.
Hello Hannah, tell me about yourself …
Hi, I’m 25 years old and I decided to move in Paris last year. I am originally from Los Angeles. I have a bachelor’s degrees in art-UCLA. I decided to live in France because I want to learn a new language and leaving abroad force me out of my comfort zone.
Why did you choose Paris?
It might sound a little bit cliché, but Paris is one of the most romantic cities in the world. I’m an artist and I really appreciate all the museums around Paris. I am living a dream.
Is that your cliché is confirmed?
Yes and no. Of course, Paris is an incredible city for art but now I have a different vision of the city. For example, in LA we never take time for lunch in a restaurant or we never sit to drink coffee. We prefer to “take away” everything. Meals – breakfast, lunch and dinner are also pretty much different but now I’m used to it. In US, I did not expect my whole family to be at the table to start eating. Everyone ate as he wanted. Secondly, I was skeptical about eating bread “baguette” every day, but I fall in love with this tradition!
Do you see other cultural differences in you daily-life?
A lot (laugh). In my opinion, in France people do not fear to talks about politics, to debate and even to take sides. In United States, it is almost impossible! I think it is interesting especially during debate in my French class.
What about your student job?
I work for Be My Nounou for now more than one year and it’s amazing: I can speak in my own language! I take care of a four years old kid. I take him after school and we walk to his parent’s house. After that, I give him a snack and we play in English. I think everyone one should doing babysitting job abroad. You really open your mind to another culture! For example, with this job I learned some French word. I also learn a lot about French culture. The family is not from Paris, so they show me, on the internet all the diversity of French landscapes.
Do you have other projects?
Yes of course! When there will be a holiday, I want to travel around France! The family gives me good advice to visit south of France! I’m exciting! This is another difference between France and USA. Here you can travel to Europe and it is so cheap. Now I’m a true Parisian at heart, I really appreciate the French culture.
